Veneers vs. Dental Crowns: Which Is Right for You?

Two ways to restore a tooth, and how the right one is chosen

Veneers and dental crowns are both used to improve the appearance and function of teeth, but they serve different purposes. The right choice depends on the health of your teeth, the amount of tooth structure that needs to be restored, and your aesthetic goals.

What are veneers?

Veneers are thin, custom-made restorations that are bonded mainly to the front surface of a tooth. They can improve tooth colour, shape, size and minor spacing concerns.

Veneers are generally considered when the underlying tooth is relatively healthy and the primary goal is aesthetic improvement.

What are dental crowns?

A dental crown covers the tooth more extensively and can provide greater structural protection. Crowns may be recommended for teeth that are significantly weakened, fractured, heavily restored, severely worn or treated with a root canal.

Crowns can also be used to restore dental implants.

Which is better — veneers or crowns?

There is no single treatment that is best for everyone.

When a tooth is healthy and mainly requires aesthetic improvement, a veneer may be appropriate. When a tooth needs greater structural support or protection, a crown may be the better choice.

The decision should be based on the condition of each tooth and the overall treatment plan.

Can they look natural?

Yes. Modern ceramic materials and careful planning can produce highly natural-looking results.

Tooth shape, colour, proportions, facial features and the patient's smile are all considered when designing the final restoration.

The goal

The aim is not simply to choose between a veneer and a crown. It is to select the most appropriate and conservative treatment for each individual tooth while achieving a natural, functional and long-lasting result.

A professional dental evaluation is the first step in determining which option is right for you.

Have a question about your own teeth?

Every mouth is different. The only way to know which option suits you is an examination and a plan built around it.
